SGM has designated April as the Month of Sustainable Development. SGM hopes that the various activities planned will serve as a platform to help educate and spread awareness on the importance of "sustainable development". Although most people will associate "sustainable development" with environmental protection, this is a limited view of what sustainable development actually is.
Through this peace exhibition, SGM earnestly hope to broaden one's perspective and understanding of "sustainable development" with an emphasis on children and building a culture of peace for the sake of the children of the world. This is the core value of sustaining the life of the earth in accordance with Principle 16 of the Earth Charter which states the shared responsibility "to promote a culture of tolerance, nonviolence and peace".
This exhibition brings together the ideas of hundreds of people and organizations dedicated to finding a path to lasting peace. Everything that is needed to build a culture of peace already exists in each of our hearts. As stated in the United Nations definition, a Culture of Peace is a set of values, attitudes, modes of behaviour and ways of life that reject violence and prevent conflicts by tackling their root causes and solving problems through dialogue and negotiation among individuals, groups and nations.
Both the Chinese and English panels will be on display. The contents comprise the following:
♦ Barriers to peace
♦ The Pattern of Peace
♦ Toward a Global Culture of Peace
♦ The United Nations and the Culture of Peace
♦ Paths to Peace
♦ Children's Dreams for Peace
♦ The Power of People
This exhibition was produced by the Soka Gakkai International in 2003 to support the United Nations' Culture of Peace initiative. For Guided Tour
